Kedarkantha Trek: A Mesmerizing Trekking Experience.

Kedarkantha Trek:

Kedarkantha Trek is easy to moderate winter trek. During winters any trek becomes difficult and the Kedarkantha trek would test your endurance! However, with a basic level of fitness, you could ace the trek at ease! As you ascend, the air becomes thin and heavy backpacks might worry you. So plan accordingly so you get to soak in nature and not let anything bother you.

Distance from Delhi

The trek to Kedarkantha begins from a village called Sankri. The village is about 186 km from Dehradun and 432 km from Delhi. Dehradun is the nearest railway station to the village, and Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport.

 About the Kedarkantha trek itinerary

Dehradun is where you need to reach first. From Dehradun8-10 hours long rides take you to Sankri, the base village. The 20 km trek is a mix of vivid flora and fauna of the region. Beautiful sights of snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys, and frozen ponds.

Trek Itinerary:

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri (8-10 hours/220 km drive).

Altitude – 6,400 feet

The drive to the village is only a brief introduction to the raw beauty of nature. To Sankri you would get to see beautiful valleys and quaint villages. Window-watch Mussoorie, Purola, Mora and Netwar, Toms River. 

Day 2: Sankri to Hargaon Base Camp via Juda ka Talab

Altitude – 6,400 feet to 8,900 feet

Juda Ka Talab is a high altitude lake that serves as the first campsite for the Kedarkantha trek. The easy scaling passes through dense pine forests and streams opening to beautiful meadows. The campsite is settled around a small pond. You would camp surrounded by pine and oak trees, and reward yourself with a stunning view of snow-laden peaks around you.

Day 3: Hargaon Base Camp to Kedarkantha Base Camp

Altitude – 8,900 feet to 11,250 feet

Kedarkantha base camp is an open area. That is the best place to catch a glimpse of Swargarohini, Kala Nag, Bandarpoonch peaks. The base camp is to just relax and marvel at nature’s sheer beauty!

Day 4: Kedarkantha Base Camp to Kedarkantha Summit and back to Base Camp

Altitude – 11,250 feet to 12,500 feet.

You can either descend back to the base camp or reach Hargaon. The trail moves in a zigzag manner, and it requires great caution to not get lost. The trials prevail the same from the base camp to the Kedarkantha top. You can reach the Kedarkantha top approximately in 4 hours. Witness the breathtaking views of the Yamunotri and Gangotri ranges!

Day 5: Kedarkantha Base Camp to Sankri via Hargaon

Altitude – 11,250 feet to 6,400 feet

The trail from the Hargoan to base camp is quite an exceptional one. With a well-marked trail of cobblestones, the steep descent route passes through thick forests of pine and maple trees and offers you stunning views of the Har ki Doon valley.

Day 6: Sankri to Dehradun

Best time to visit Kedarkantha Trek:

The best time to do the Kedarkantha trek is from December to April. Sparkling with white snow everywhere, the base of alpine trees is half-submerged in piles of snow! The snow-clad mountains around are at their best during this time.

So not only your trekking is an overwhelming experience, but also you get to witness the raw beauty of nature. The monsoon months (June to September) are the time to avoid the trek unless you wish to get washed off! The trek is also open during summer. But the beauty of Kedarkantha is truly paradisiacal during winter!
